They were looking for re-thinking of the entrance to their department. We shifted a reception desk / administrative area back into the offices and created a gallery as introduction. Primary use of the gallery is mini curations of archival projects, video and flat work. The space also works as barrier. This is what is going on down the hallway, here you are welcome, have a seat, don't agitate the artists. This is one of my favorite galleries. Laura and Adra have put together some great shows that push the work into the space, or let the space into the work. Either way you look at it they do a great job. Solid forms with function voids and protrusions. We left the steel legs raw where they hit the floor. The dirt is always there, no need to fight it, we let it be. Each year, the organizers of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York ask an up-and-coming firm to design the "connector" between the Javits Center and its tented annex. In 2003 release1 was selected to give it a stab. The result explored the boundaries between furniture and environment, expression and destruction. We designed a continuous table and bench that meandered between the two exhibit halls. Its purpose served as a visual link between the two spaces while providing a place of rest fair-goers. The piece transformed the usually unwelcoming connector into both a place of transition and (ironically) a rare place to rest at the furniture fair. We capped it with 200 graphite sticks spread along its length. The results ranged from adverts to proclamations on the state of the world of design.
